Florida Motorcycle Accident Causes

The warm weather and various motorcycle rallies in Florida attract a multitude of riders every year. An increase in the number of motorcycles on the road, however, invariably leads to an increase in motorcycle crashes. There are many hazards responsible for both single-vehicle and multiple-vehicle motorcycle crashes each year. Some of the most common factors that cause motorcycle crashes are as follows:

  • Road Hazards: Debris, potholes, puddles, rough pavement, or items in the roadway can create serious hazards for motorcyclists, although having little impact on automobiles. Motorcycle riders may have to switch lanes suddenly to avoid these hazards.

  • Speeding: At high speeds, the front tire of a motorcycle may begin to wobble, creating a dangerous situation for riders. This wobbling may be due to misalignment of the front and back tires of the motorcycle. If you have been injured in this type of accident, you may be able to recover damages from the manufacturer of the motorcycle under the legal theory of products liability.

  • Riding Skills: Beginning riders may not fully appreciate the hazards of operating a motorcycle or possess the skill level required to operate a bike safely. Consequently, inadequate riding skills are a major cause of motorcycle crashes among beginners. All inexperienced riders should complete a course in motorcycle safety before taking their motorcycle on the roadway.

  • Weather Conditions: Inclement weather, such as snow, ice, rain, fog, and wind can create serious hazards for motorcycle riders. Motorcyclists should avoid driving in severe weather conditions.

  • Reduced Visibility of Motorcycles: Drivers of other vehicles often find it difficult to see a motorcycle due to various factors, such as weather conditions, the small vehicle profile of motorcycles, or their own car’s blind spots. In most crashes involving a motorcycle and another vehicle, the driver of the other vehicle claims to have never seen the motorcyclist.

The vast majority of multiple-vehicle crashes occur at intersections. Therefore, you should exercise extreme caution at every intersection. Before entering an intersection, look both ways and make sure you are able to stop, if necessary. You should also be aware of whether vehicles behind you are too close to be able to avoid hitting you if you are required to make a sudden stop at an intersection. Never pass or change lanes in an intersection.
