Florida Motorcycle Insurance Law
Motorcycle insurance is not mandatory under Florida law. Although all Florida motorists are required to have personal injury protection (PIP) insurance, which pays 80% of your medical bills and 60% of your lost wages if you are involved in an accident regardless of who is at fault, PIP does not cover motorcycle operators. If you own a motorcycle, you should purchase motorcycle insurance in order to be covered in the event of an accident. Florida’s financial responsibility law encourages motorcycle riders to secure $10,000 in liability insurance coverage for property damage and medical expenses. If you are involved in a motorcycle accident and you do not have insurance, your license may be suspended and your motorcycle tags and registration may be revoked. In addition, you may be required to purchase high-risk liability insurance for 3 years. Therefore, although insurance coverage for motorcyclists is only encouraged - rather than explicitly required - you will suffer severe penalties if you are involved in an accident without insurance.
Collision coverage will only cover damage to your motorcycle in the event of a crash. Comprehensive coverage reimburses you for damage to your motorcycle by other events, as well, such as riots, floods, fires, or theft, to name a few. Liability coverage compensates other motorists for bodily injury or property damage you may cause as the result of an accident. The liability coverage minimum limits for Florida are as follows:
-
$10,000 maximum payment for bodily injuries to one person injured in one accident.
-
$20,000 maximum payment for bodily injuries to all persons injured in one accident.
-
$10,000 maximum payment for property damage in one accident.
Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) covers bodily injuries to you or your passenger caused by an uninsured driver. The minimum UM limit in Florida is $20,000 maximum payment for one person’s injuries in one accident and $40,000 maximum payment for all bodily injuries in one accident. Underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) pays for your bodily injuries, including medical expenses, lost wages, or other damages and property damage caused by another driver without adequate insurance. UIM coverage usually pays the difference between the minimum amount you select and the underinsured motorist’s coverage limits.
